It’s upon us already – the last long weekend of summer. Saying farewell to the season of patio dining and outdoor pools always blows, so we might as well send summer off with a bang.  Screw DIY and suss out these events going down around Calgary over the Labour Day weekend.

Sunday brings the Canmore Highland Games to this sweet salubrious spot. What’s not to love about men in skirts showing off their prowess during feats of strength? With piping and drumming, dog and sheep competitions, there’s a lot of action going on. If you’re not up for a pancake breakfast and traditional celtic fare, head to Thai it Up for a savoury meal.

Small town parades are the best, and you won’t want to miss this Labour Day Parade that winds its way through this mountain town beginning at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, September 2, 2013.

Okotoks over a long weekend

There’s lots of lovely bistros in Okotoks, too!

First Saturdays in Okotoks bring live entertainment, an art market and free crafts for kids aged 4 to 10-years on the lawn of the Okotoks Art Gallery. Saturday, August 31 also brings the 12th annual Chili Fest & Cook Off. Tastings begin at 11 a.m., and you’ll find a bouncy castle plus all the other kiddie attractions, too.

Okanagan September long weekend

Surf and turf action reins supreme during the long weekend in this luscious land. Check out what’ SUP during the Kalamalka Classic, Canada’s largest Standup Paddleboard festival August 30 to September 1. Both recreational and competitive paddlers can have a go at this easy sport, or if you’re looking for more speed, dive into Atlantis Waterslide’s Annual Speed Slide Competition September 1. Horsey types (and gamblers) will want to trot over to Osoyoos for a Day at the Races August 31 for horse racing and carnie action, while the Silver Star Freeride Festival offers a dirt jump jam, bike demos and a family fun village race. All that action works up an appetite, so be sure to suss out these top places to eat and drink in the Okanagan.
