A reason for giving

Does Christmas strengthen your community? I’m not about to get all preachy on you, I just became rather contemplative this weekend, thinking about why we give each other gifts during the holidays and who we give them to. I don’t have a lot of people to buy for, which makes it a bit easier for me to think of others (not that I’m some magnanimous person or anything).

Why it’s better to give than receive

Seeing the joy on a child’s face makes up for all that time spent at the mall or racing over town trying to track down that perfect present. I was reminded of this when I popped over to my neighbour’s house to drop off a little something for her daughter. It’s never too early to create magical memories, which is why I thought I’d share with her a little something, so we could all get into the spirit of the holiday season.

Can this child wait for Christmas?

This little cherub was so thrilled to get a present, she stood in awe for a few minutes just admiring the wrapping paper.

Who’s more interested in this gift?

Then her dog got in the action. A thorough sniff revealed no food was in the package, so off he trotted.

The paper is almost as cute as what’s inside…

If you really want to mess kids up, put their gift inside the Apple box your computer came in. Fortunately, my wee neighbour was too young to feel any disappointment about not getting her own computer.

So pleased!

She was so thrilled to receive a brand spanking new, sparkly Sofia the First Royal Cursty Dress from Disney Junior, it was hard to keep her still for the obligatory snaps.

Royal Purse and Fan Set

However, the Royal Purse and Fan Set just might have been her favourite.

I’m pretty sure the happiness I felt watching her unwrap this gift was greater than the excitement she felt. And that’s what giving presents at this time of year is all about. Through giving, we experience joy.

P.S. If your children are in the 3-7-year-old set and you’re looking for appropriate viewing content, the Disney Junior channel is back. They’ve got a great line up of magical holiday programs to keep them enthralled while you tackle that wrapping.

Thanks to Disney Junior for reminding me what’s import at this time of year. Thank you so much for supporting the brands that support Travels with Baggage.

    1. So glad to hear. When I watched the video I felt sad my daughter is out of this phase. Enjoy it while it lasts!
