Posto: A New Italian Restaurant Opens in Calgary
Posto is a fab new Italian restaurant located next door to Bonterra in Calgary. The name Posto means place, and this cozy wine bar and pizza joint promises to live up to its name as a lively meeting spot. I adored my meal so much last week, I went back a second time two days later. Here’s what stood out.
Wild boar prosciutto
Creamy burrata smeared onto thin crostini is also a winner.
For insalata, you can’t go wrong with the Romaine. It’s like a deconstructed caesar studded with caper berries, white anchovy, smoky pancetta and a softly poached egg. You have the option of adding a half or whole lobster to make a main of it. Don’t hesitate, just do it! “It’s crispy, dense and flavourful,” claims one eight-year-old future food critic.
Squid Ink Ravioli
You’ll want to order a few Piatti (smaller plates) to share. Standouts include the Squid Ink Ravioli crammed with lobster and the Beef Cheek. Served on a massive cutting board, the meat is lean yet rich and smoky and flakes apart with your fork. I’d never had bone marrow before, but loved it, and I bet you will, too.
For lighter fare, opt for the halibut. It’s still a substantial meal, and the dense polenta fries are the perfect vessel for sopping up the aioli and savoury romesco sauce.
There’s also wood-oven fired pizzas you can top with pretty much anything. The crusts are totally toothsome and are just as good as those from CIBO, their sister restaurant.
For desserts you can’t go wrong with either the Cannoli or Zeppole. One of my girlfriends is so serious about her cannoli she brought in shells from Hamilton for her wedding. Anyway, she gave Posto’s the thumbs up, and the Zeppole is pretty sweet as well. In the words of our waiter, “It’s basically a Mount Royal Tim Bit.” Meaning: this is the fanciest donut hole you’ll ever scarf back. Fresh from the fryer, they come to your table warm dusted with sugar and practically melt in your mouth.
What do you think is the best Italian joint in the city?
