Where to watch the royal wedding in Calgary

If you’re a royal fan like me, you’ve probably already calendared the nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Yes, it’s a bummer Harry’s off the market, but Meghan seems like such a peach, I’m not too jealous. Having no TV, my biggest problem of late has been figuring out where to watch the Royal Wedding in Calgary.

Sadly, the Fairmont Palliser is no longer hosting a Royal Wedding viewing brunch on May 19th. They are, however, still offering a Royal Wedding Afternoon Tea that runs from May 1st until August 15th, 2018.

If you’re not here (St. George’s Chapel) on May 19, the next best place is at Royale.

So the official wedding ceremony kicks off at noon – local time at St. George’s Chapel. This is the 15th century church on the grounds of Windsor Castle. That’s also where Edward and Sophie married, plus Charles and Camilla. (Trust me, I know my royal weddings!) Back to Megs and Harry, their ceremony starts at 5 a.m. Mountain Time (7 a.m. Eastern), and all that awesome pre-wedding commentary gets going at least an hour before that.

The new hotspot to watch the Royal Wedding in Calgary is at Royale. That’s the lovely French restaurant on 17 Ave. S.W. Britster, an organization that celebrates modern British culture is hosting a viewing parting that runs from 9:30 a.m until noon on the big day. Brilliant, right?! They pre-record the festivities and we get to sleep in.

Coverage will be BBC (natch!) and broadcast on a large screen. Everybody’s favourite butler, Jimmy-Lee Vennard of Azuridge Estates will be master of ceremonies and Caroline Saunders, of the British Consulate will provide commentary.

It’s going to be posh, fun and the dress code is garden party attire. Food stations will feature modern British cuisine and we’ll toast the nuptials with sparkling wine. Best is Oscar-style gift bags will be doled out to attendees. You MUST book in for this event in advance. Do that here

Option #2 for Royal Wedding TV Viewing

Reader Rock Garden is an ideal choice for those who prefer a later start. This tranquil spot is tucked away off Macleod Trail, near Stampede Park. Their event runs from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and will show the royal wedding inside Union Chapel. Afterwards, you’ll stroll through the lovely gardens to the Reader Garden Cafe for high tea.

There’s a dress to impress theme and the “wedding guest” with the most creative fascinator wins a private garden tour through this National Historic Site.  Tickets can be bought here.

Royal Wedding Afternoon Teas

Can’t make it to a Royal Wedding viewing party? Book in for the Royal Wedding Afternoon Tea that runs from May 1st until August 15th, 2018 at Fairmont Palliser. Served up in their opulent lobby and Rimrock Dining Room, many of the menu items are inspired by the couple’s favourite foods with nods to their backgrounds. For example, there’ll be a mini BLT sandwich and an apple pie tart with caramel drizzle to honour Meghan’s American background.

Tuck into Early Grey macarons, cucumber tea sandwich and of course, scones with clotted cream and house-made preserves. The highlight of the menu will undoubtably be the lemon cake with elderflower—created and inspired by the couple’s actual wedding cake and topped with edible gold.

As a special add-on, Fairmont Palliser will offer specialty cocktails inspired by the couple – “The Meghan” is a sparkling Negroni inspired by her favourite drink, the Negroni, and “The Harry” is a Ciroc Moscow Mule Mimosa inspired by Harry’s favourite vodka, Ciroc Ultra.

Where to take the best royal wedding selfies

From May 1st until August 15th, a stunning 10 foot x 10 foot flower wall will be in the Fairmont Palliser lobby. Remember Kim and Kayne’s flower wall? This one, displayed in collaboration with Chair Flair Linen Rentals and Wedding décor, will be along the same lines, but better because it’s Canadian:) Just be sure to follow @FairmontPalliser and @chairflair on Instagram, and use the #PalliserRoyalWedding hashtag.
