When I go on holiday (and by holiday I mean being completely off the clock – no interviews, no note taking, no obligatory social media updates), I tend not to do very much. OK, not entirely true, but I do scale it back. And part of the joy in having children, besides dressing them up in ugly clothes and taking pictures of them, is recreating your favourite childhood memories. For me, a trip to Whitefish, Montana fits the bill perfectly. Here’s a look at my favourite things to do in Whitefish, Mt.

Whitefish Mt
We used to haul out every Boxing Day to Whitefish Mountain Resort (though it’ll always be Big Mountain to me), but a trip here in summer is equally worthy. Whitefish is an easy destination for southern Albertans and it’s super close to Glacier National Park.
Things to do in Whitefish
If you’re Canadian, you’ll be drawn to Whitefish, Montana for the shopping. True, there are no outlet malls, but it’s still fun to meander through downtown Whitefish or box stores filled with mass produced goods you can’t possibly live without. Yes, there is a Target near Whitefish, in Kalispell – about a 20-minute drive away.
And don’t worry about those pesky border officials. One only requires an air of confidence and fresh application of lipstick when discussing your purchases (unless of course, you get a female agent, and then you’re hooped). But if say, you’re bringing back 24 bottles of wine, you’ll want to go through an Alberta border crossing, not Roosville, where you’ll face more than the GST on your alcohol, thanks to B.C. taxes.
Whitefish Mountain Resort
At Whitefish Mountain Resort there’s an awesome alpine slide and Aerial Adventure Park to amuse the kiddies. On Tuesday evenings, there’s a sweet farmer’s market in the heart of downtown on Central Ave.
Golf
Admittedly, I’m not much of a golfer, but something about the course at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club makes me want to hit the links. It’s stunning and majestic and screams “play me,” whenever I drive by.
But the best part about any trip to the States is that Americans know how to heat their outdoor pools, something we Canadians haven’t yet figured out. Of course, you could a rent a boat and cruise around Whitefish Lake, but since I was staying with my good friend Red, I was content to lay poolside and work on my skin cancer.
See, I told you I don’t do very much on my vacations. But if you’re keen to travel around the state, there are plenty of Billings Montana things to do, too!

Hanging out at Loula’s Cafe and eating lemon sour cream pie was definitely a highlight of our brief stay in Whitefish. Also loved exploring all of the cool shops.

Never even heard of Whitefish. We’ve always wanted to do a cross boarder road trip, sounds like an easy one with activities for all!
