Gingerbread men (and ladies) are a holiday staple in our house. I like to dunk mine in a steaming mug of English Breakfast. My daughter, however, prefers hers straight up. Little did I know that first bite of a gingerbread man is actually a personality decoder. According to research, you are how you eat. And that first bite of a gingerbread cookie says a lot about your personality.

Oh, hello! Will it be your head, arms or legs that I gnaw off first?

Dunkin’ Donuts recently asked people a biting question as part of their annual holiday survey. They asked: Which part of the gingerbread man cookie do you eat first?

The cookie claim

Dr. Alan Hirsch, the neurological director at Smell & Taste Treatment Research Foundation claims the first bite you take of a cookie person reveals a lot about your personality. Curious? Go score yourself a gingerbread cookie right now and take a big bite before reading on. Just don’t overthink it. Grab a cookie and go! Don’t have gingerbread man in your kitchen. They’re fun to make, especially if you use some tricked out cookie cutters

Most people start with the head. Did you? According to the results, nearly two-thirds (64%) of survey respondents eat the head of the gingerbread cookie first. If you fall into this camp, you’re a natural born leader. But you already suspected that, didn’t you?

What the First Bite of a Gingerbread Man Says About Your Personality
Oh Gingy! My daughter is so grateful I didn’t name her Ginger.

Twenty percent go straight for the gingerbread man’s legs, revealing that they are the sensitive sort. Fancy taking the arms out of the equation first? Only 16% of cookie eaters do apparently, and this is where it gets tricky. If you gnaw off the left arm straight away, you’re a creative type. Amputate the right arm and you’re a pessimist. Gah!

If one chooses to bite the head first, it indicates an achievement-oriented individual, a natural leader, who won’t take no for an answer. If the initial bite is the right hand, it reflects an individual who tends to be skeptical and pessimistic, while those who initially bite the left arm have a flare for creativity and are more extroverted. Those who first choose the legs tend to be more sensitive, revelling in the company of others,” says Hirsch.

I wonder what it means if you’re a dunker or a crumbler onto cheesecake? Just try not to bite off more than you can chew.

What part of the gingerbread dude did you tuck into first? I’m a leg man, myself. Happy holidays!
