Stampede Fashion 101

Nailing your Stampede fashion looks isn’t a simple matter. Jeans, boots, cute cowgirl top: That’s all you need, right? Not always. Where to find the right look can be challenging if transforming into urban cowgirl isn’t as second nature to you as it is for this gal. Here’s a look at some pieces I recently found at Market Mall to freshen up your Stampede wardrobe.

Stampede Bling

Statement earrings
Top marks for turquoise accents.

I’m so in love with these delicate turquoise and coral fringe earrings ($55) from Banana Republic. How I wish I had pierced ears! Gingham seems to be spot on every summer and it also works beautifully for Stampede. This no iron, button-down long sleeve ($74) can easily transition from the boardroom to the bar.

Banana Republic gingham top
Gingham never gets old.

One of the best selections for denim jackets (and belts) is found at Guess. They also have several fringe tops and this sweet handkerchief halter ($59.50).

Or pair halter top with Daisy Dukes.

For cut offs, Below the Belt had an impressive selection of both distressed ($40) and high end labels such as Mavi ($56).

Mavi cut offs
Denim gets major use during the Calgary Stampede

American Eagle Outfitters had a lot of cut offs, too, but I was scared away from that section when I saw the abundance of overalls. That trend totally freaks me out. Maybe it’s because I went overboard with overalls in the early 90‘s and when a trend circles back a second time looking for innocent victims, one ought to be on guard. (My spidey-sense starts tingling with scrunchies, too.)

Best Stampede boots

Free people booties
Alberta Boot Co has the most legit boots, but knock offs can be found at the mall.

Steve Madden has loads of western booties and I flashed my credit card to snag the pair on the right  when I found out they were only $149 (down from $449!).

Stampede jewelry
Again, there’s that turquoise!

One of best selections of turquoise and western themed jewelry can be found at newly opened JoyDrop. It’s super affordable with most necklaces around the $30 mark, bracelets and rings from $15. And they have Prtty Peaushun! If you’ve got pasty white gams, you’ll want to use this lotion (like all the celebs do!).

Lammle's women's shirt
Yes, you do need a few western shirts in your Stampede wardrobe.

If you really want to get gussied up, Lammle’s is your Mecca. There’s brightly coloured western tops (from $44.95), real cowboy boots (from $159.95) and adorable shirt dresses ($69.95).

    1. But what do you wear during Stampede week, Michelle? I bet you have some great ideas…

  1. Andrea lee

My go-to outfit is: plaid shirt from Gap, jeans from banana republic, white cowboy hat and that’s it. I don’t have boots or any accessories! Your blog have me some good ideas though, now I gotta go do some shopping! Thanks for the chance! Fingers crossed, this would help me complete my outfit for the Stampede!

  2. My stampede wardrobe includes chambray shirts, colored jeans and statement jewelry and moccasins or cowboy boots

    1. Yes! A chambray shirt is perfect for Stampede. Do you ever get your toes crushed wearing moccasins?

  3. Sue LeBreton

Thanks for the ideas. My Stampede wardrobe is nil after living away for a decade.

  4. My favorite stampede outfit is cute cowboy boots and a belted summery dress – perfect cowgirl look, and cool enough for the *figers crossed* hot weather we’ll have!

  5. My go to outfit is a cute dress, jean vest, hat and boots, last year we ended up with so many hot days, I was thankful not to wear jeans every day!

  6. Mine would be a cute little sundress, jean jacket, my brown suede ankle boots and some great statement earrings…. That’ll take me from the beer garden to the midway and back again!

  7. My go-to outfit for Stampede is my favorite pair of short cut offs, a blue and white western buttoned top, and cowboy boots! Great options mentioned in your post, I really like those Steve Madden boots!

  8. My fav Stampede go to outfit is a my white, sort of sheer t-shirt with a brown and silver bull skull – I know, it doesn’t sound that fun but it is great because you can dress it up with a skirt and cowboy boots or wear it with jeans for a night on the mid-way with the kids. I also have these great turquoise jewelry pieces from Silpada.

  9. Stephanie Warthe

My go-to Stampede outfit is a lacy white dress paired with a cropped jean jacket, and big bold metal accessories! And of course, a great pair of brown cowboy boots. 🙂 I’d absolutely love to try the Prtty Peaushun, fingers crossed!!

    1. I love your bold metallic accessories idea. Prtty Peaushun would be ideal paired with a lacy white dress. Thanks for commenting!

  10. Holly Herman

I like to pair cutoff s with a plaid shirt or peasant blouse, white cowboy hat, brown cowboy boots, and some turquoise jewelery. Being of Scottish heritage, I could really use some help in the pastey department 😉 Thanks for the chance Jody!

  11. I kind of go with a Taylor swift look for stampede! Sundress or jeans with a floaty tanktop, with a white or black cowboy hat. Then I borrow my dad’s old brown boots and get going!

      1. I’m quite tall with very long legs. Have to have the size 11 feet to keep myself upright. :p
